Apple Expands iCloud System Status Page After Repeated Outages

Apple has updated its iCloud System Status page with a much more comprehensive page breaking down outages by service and showing recent outages in a detailed timeline. The old system simple offered written status updates in a more free-form fashion.

Over the past year, Apple has seen various iCloud services go offline several times. Just today, some users were unable to access iCloud mail, iCloud Documents, Photo Stream, and Backup & Restore.

With the change, it looks like Apple is taking iCloud a bit more seriously, particularly following Eddy Cue's promotion to Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services.

Photo Sharing App Snapchat Adds Video, iPhone 5 Support [iOS Blog]

Snapchat today released an update adding video taking capabilities to its popular real-time picture taking app.

With Snapchat, users can take temporary photos and share them with friends. The photos expire after a set amount of time, up to 10 seconds, and are auto-deleted. Taking a screenshot alerts the picture sender, keeping photos private.

With the new 4.0.0 version of the app, video has been included. Up to 10 seconds of video can be recorded, with the same general rules. A video can only be watched once, and then it will be deleted.

Along with video, the update adds iPhone 5 support, speed improvements, and additional privacy settings.

-Updated for iPhone 5
-Press and Hold Camera Button for VIDEO!
-Tilt iDevice for Landscape Captions
-Fullscreen Preview
-New Settings: Control Who Can Send You Snaps
-Improved Group Send
-Integration with Address Book
-Fixed Focal Length on Camera Preview
-Faster Capture and Send
-Additional Bug Fixes & Improvements
Snapchat has become a hit in the year since its release, with more than 50 million photos shared every day. In comparison, Instagram users share five million photos a day.

Just last week, Snapchat closed a round of funding, raising more than $8 million, according to TechCrunch, setting its valuation at approximately $50 million.

Snapchat is a free download on the App Store for the iPhone. [Direct Link]

Anonymous formclose (x)Developers Behind Orchestra to Release Mailbox, A New Mail Management AppThursday December 13, 2012 1:03 pm PST by Juli CloverMailbox is an upcoming email management app developed by the team that designed collaborative task management app Orchestra, which was lauded for its simple design.

Mailbox, which is designed to work with Gmail, features a clean, simple design that uses intuitive touch gestures, much like list-making app Clear. Quick swiping emails to the right removes them from the inbox and archives them, while a longer slide and hold deletes them.

Reorganization of the inbox is also a simple task with drag gestures, and the app also allows users swipe left to "Snooze" emails, putting them out of sight and out of mind until later.

TechCrunch has an early hands-on review of the app:
Mailbox takes a very stripped-down approach, providing a limited set of options for dealing with email. It breaks incoming emails into three basic categories: Those you’d like to keep in your inbox, those you'd like to save for later, and those you'd like to get rid of as quickly as possible.

The whole thing is built on the concept of gestures, basically swiping left or swiping right over an email in your inbox to do something with it. Want to archive an email? A short swipe to the right will do that, clearing it from view. Want to delete? Try a longer swipe right.

But the most interesting aspect is the save-for-later option. Don’t have time for an email right now but want to respond at some point? Just swipe to the left. Once you do, you’ll be met with a few options for when you want that email to appear in your inbox: later in the day (three hours later), tomorrow, on the weekend, next week, etc. It then clears those emails from the inbox but makes them easily accessible from the menu screen. It works the same for adding emails to lists, like a "read later" or "watch later" list. It just needs a longer swipe.
The Verge has also had the opportunity to test Mailbox, calling the app "nothing short of spectacular."

Though there are a slew of emailing apps available, including Apple's own Mail app, Google's Gmail app, and third party alternatives like Sparrow, no email client offers the innovative quick-swipe interface of Mailbox.

Mailbox is in closed beta at this time, but the website states that it will be available for iPhone + Gmail after the new year. [ 25 comments ]Tweet Top Rated Comments(View all)

Gotcha ! /coolstoryRating: 4 PositivesAvatarpetsoundsPosted: 2 days ago at 04:30 pmAll e-mail goes through their servers. Not only does this mean you're putting the trust of your personal communications and/or business communications in the hands of a small company and hope they won't 1) read it, and 2) have insecure servers which could allow other people to read it, but if their service has an outage, you won't get any mail.

Also no Exchange support.

So, no thanks. Design looks nice, and some nice UX ideas there, but going through their servers is a non-starter for me.Rating: 3 PositivesAvatarBinaryTimPosted: 2 days ago at 01:56 pmToo lazy to read; will it support iCloud, Gmail, notifications, etc.? Ta.

Sorry that just looks brutal. Those half/full swipe gestures would drive me nuts. Going to delete instead of read by mistake. Seems like in trying to make mail more streamlined all they did is make it bloated and less intuitive.

The colored indicators are quite clear when you swipe but I think it's just a matter of getting used to it. My first thought from this demo is how intuitive and simple it was. I already use and prefer apps that use gestures like tweetbot, reeder, pocket, sparrow, chrome, etc... It did not take long to gain that muscle memory. A quick swipe is always faster and less tedious than 2-3 taps. If you thought this looks brutal you should see the gestures I have with bettertouchtool on my macbook air :pRating: 2 PositivesAvatarjessica.Posted: 2 days ago at 02:21 amThere is no way I want a mail app that uses their servers.Rating: 1 Positives

Anonymous formclose (x)Steve Jobs on Computer Animation as a Milestone for Film History, Before the Release of 'Toy Story'Friday December 14, 2012 8:37 am PST by Husain SumraSteve Jobs famously purchased Pixar from Lucasfilm for $10 million in 1986, selling the company to Disney 20 years later for $7.4 billion. In 1995, Pixar was ready to unveil its first feature film, Toy Story, which was also the first feature film composed entirely of computer-animated graphics. Before the film was released, Steve Jobs spoke at SIGGRAPH 95, a conference for those in the computer graphics industry.

In his speech, the full video of which was discovered by Mashable, Jobs presciently compared computer-animated films to such game-changing breakthroughs as sound and Technicolor, even as Toy Story had yet to be released in theaters.
I want to talk for a minute about a place in history. The computer graphics community has been climbing the wall of the castle for 20 years, standing on each others shoulders and made immense progress as we've seen today. And finally we have now scaled the castle wall and we're in the castle now with Toy Story and I think that's an achievement that many in this room should take proud ownership in.

And we should take a few minutes today, on the hundredth anniversary of the invention of the motion picture, to contemplate the contributions that we're making. We have now pioneered, I think really, the next major offshoot of the motion picture. It's going to be a medium in its own right, it's going to have unique talents in itself that we will find boundaries for as we explore it over the next many years.

Toy Story went on to become a blockbuster, taking in over $360 million at the box office and spawning sequels, spinoffs, and extensive merchandising as it garnered a prominent place in entertainment history.

Before Toy Story, computer graphics were used for either short films or to augment live action movies with special effects. Since Toy Story, there has been a boom in the production of computer-animated films and less of the traditional hand-drawn animated films. In early November, Pixar Animation Studios named its main building in honor of Steve Jobs. [ 25 comments ]Tweet Top Rated Comments(View all)

As it says in the story it was the first fully computer generated feature film. There had been many short films as well as the TV show you mention before it but Toy Story took all this to a new level. Steve Jobs bank rolled Pixar for many years spending a vast amount of money on developing the company to the point where it could produce something like Toy Story, in computer animation he saw a future in something that many of the big players thought was a complete wast of time.Rating: 5 PositivesAvatarmbarriault1 day ago at 08:55 amNot to discredit Pixar's accomplishments (quite the opposite, I think they're the best filmmakers on the planet), but the Canadian TV series ReBoot, the first fully CGI television program, started airing a year before Toy Story premiered.Rating: 5 PositivesAvatarSnowLeopard OSX1 day ago at 11:14 amI'm an avid Pixar fan -- this is brilliant.

Strange how Jobs keeps referring to CGI as "synthetic," making computer animation sound somehow inferior. But his pride is really evident.

It depends on the linguistic baggage you bring with you. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/synthesis

Speaking to that audience? I doubt a person in the room thought computer-synthesis was inferior in any way, other than to the extent that it was not yet as good as they could imagine.

The word was hijacked, as was "artificial." ("Art" is cool, but "artificial" is not? What's that all about?) But all of language is man-made, so we use (or abuse) a human creation to denigrate other human creations.

Compliment or slur? It's often just a matter of context and/or tone of voice.Rating: 1 PositivesAvatarMacLawyer1 day ago at 10:56 amIf we had Google back then, they would come out with Google Animation (quickly thrown together stick animations) and claim they invented it.Rating: 1 Positives

Anonymous formclose (x)iPhone 5 Launches in 33 New Countries Including ChinaFriday December 14, 2012 7:39 am PST by Eric SlivkaIn line with its announcement from earlier this month, Apple today launched the iPhone 5 in 33 new countries, with the most prominent member of the group being China.

Unlike the chaos that reigned at the iPhone 4S launch earlier this year, The Wall Street Journal reports that the iPhone 5 appears to have been quite subdued. It is unclear, however, how much of the change may be due to lack of interest and how much may have been related to snowy weather and changes in Apple's sales policies designed to reduce scalping and other factors that have led to problems at previous launches.
Friday’s iPhone 5 launch was notable for a different kind of white: a rare accumulation of fresh snow that blanketed the nearly empty plaza outside the Sanlitun store.

At 8 am on Friday, when the store opened to hurrahs from employees, only two consumers stood inside a cordon set up by Apple, though they were joined by a desultory snow man someone had made on a bench near the entrance.
Apple's new sales policies require customers to enter a lottery for the right to purchase an iPhone in the store, with winners being given specific windows of time in which to pick up their devices.

Fortune has also collected a handful of videos showing launches in China, Malaysia, and the Philippines that were part of today's major rollout in the following countries: Albania, Antigua and Barbuda, Armenia, Bahamas, Bahrain, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Ecuador, Grenada, Indonesia, Israel, Jamaica, Jordan, Kuwait, Macedonia, Malaysia, Moldova, Montenegro, Panama, Paraguay, Philippines, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Taiwan, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela. Wow, two people? That's a stark contrast to past launches. Even considering some snow, a lottery system and anti-scalping policies that is strange. Perhaps this is a turning point for the iPhone. Not that Android products are super exciting either.

Unfortunately these days the media could report that Tim Cook arrived late to work and the stock would drop $10. Apple the company and AAPL the stock don't really seem to have much to do with each other. Hopefully Cook & Co. Have their eye on the company and not the stock.

Of course. But I'm using the iPad mini as a reference. All the anecdotal evidence we have is it's selling really well (NPD just claimed Apple increased the number of displays needed to 12M). Yet on launch day there weren't long lines of people outside most Apple stores. Perhaps that's not the best way to gauge sales anymore.
